Innovative and reliable inkjet decoration from Nuova Fima
February 2008
Working with the digital printing specialists Jemtex, and in collaboration with some of the best colour providers, Nuova Fima is able to offer customers GEMA, a CMYK decorating system for ceramic tiles. The high quality of the latest results has even allowed the first digitally decorated porcelain tile to be polished to a mirror finish. Alessio Buttelli (pictured above), Nuova Fima’s project manager for decorating technologies, commented very positively about these results: “We are pleased that the hard work has given very good results and we now have, not just a competitive product, but a technology that allows the creation of unique effects”. Using revolutionary technology that prevents nozzles from getting obstructed, GEMA has a smoother and more reliable operation compared to similar technologies. In addition, the system allows the decoration of heavily structured tiles, those with high relieves that are typically difficult to decorate. Rather than use a “drop on demand” system where the ceramic ink nozzles open and close as required by the decoration, GEMA has a continuous flow, which is deflected as required. This allows continuous mixing of the inks and avoids blockages. The proprietary control technology uses two separate computers to manage the operation of the nozzles, allowing the possibility of dropping up to 50,000 drops per second from each independent nozzle. A camera assisted feedback system monitors the correct application of colour that can be applied using 32 or 50 micron nozzles. Unlike other decoration systems on the market, GEMA can apply ink at a distance of at least 10mm which allows the decoration of heavily structured tiles, special pieces and even plates. From a factory management and logistic point of view the obvious advantage in using digital technology is the elimination of the need for drums and screens, in turn eliminating the major complications in terms of stock handling, installation, storage, space etc. With almost no cost involved in the event of a product change, GEMA allows tile manufacturers to produce only what they need, reducing batch size, eliminating minimum production quantities and the storage of stock. Huge savings can be made by manufacturers that frequently produce small batches and have frequent product changes. With lower running and managing costs and reduced storage, there are large cost savings for those willing to invest in this technology. |

Tile manufacturers have been waiting for a product that can reliably and easily decorate tiles using digital inkjet printing technology but without the associated problems. Nuova Fima has finally achieved the solution to this problem.
